This global map shows the temperature differences compared to preindustrial times. Sources/Usage: Some content may have restrictions. Ice and glaciers come and go, daily and over millennia Some icebergs have been seen, in much smaller form, as far south as the island of Bermuda. Ocean-bound icebergs travel with the currents, melting along the way. In many places, glaciers on Greenland reach to the sea, and one estimate is that as much as 125 mi 3 (517 km 3) of ice "calves" into the ocean each year-one of Greenland's contributions to the global water cycle. The ice is so heavy that the land below it has been pressed down into the shape of a bowl. The ice cap averages about 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) in thickness, but can be as thick as 14,000 feet (4,300 meters). Over the millennia, as the snow got deeper, it compressed and became ice. The ice cap became so large over time (about 600,000 cubic miles (mi 3) or 2.5 million cubic kilometers (km 3)) because more snow fell than melted. The Greenland ice cap is an interesting part of the water cycle. The vast majority, almost 90 percent, of Earth's ice mass is in Antarctica, while the Greenland ice cap contains 10 percent of the total global ice mass. The white areas in this map show glaciers and ice sheets around the world (reproduced from National Geographic WORLD, February 1977, no. Map of where glaciers and ice caps exist on Earth. In the grand scheme of things, this water is still part of the water cycle. Short-term storage might be days or weeks for water in a lake, but it could be thousands of years for deep groundwater storage or even longer for water at the bottom of an ice cap, such as in Greenland. By storage, we mean water that is locked up in its present state for a relatively long period of time. But, in fact, much more water is "in storage" at any one time than is actually moving through the cycle. The water cycle describes how water moves above, on, and through the Earth. The Greenland icecap averages almost a mile in thickness and contains about 10 percent of the total ice mass on the globe. Perhaps what is most striking in this picture is the extent of the Greenland icecap - almost the whole island is overlain by a huge and deep (almost three miles deep in places) sheet of ice. The Arctic region holds a massive amount of ice.
#Ice age 2 the meltdown logo movie
And the humor is a little more varied this time and not completely non stop.Īnd the animation is a little better, you can almost feel the beautiful sunlight here.Īnd the music score here is a BIG improvement since the first movie! ( I mean it's John Powell! ) The first have only a few memorable scores, while in this movie pretty much all the scores are memorable.Īnd I also like how the interaction between the characters feels a little bit nicer this time, which makes sense since they know each other better now.Sources/Usage: Public Domain. And I like how Scrat actually come to some use for the story in the end and wasn't just a masqot. And she is a great female addition to the team. And I like how this new character Ellie is a very smart girl and her little story where she believes she's an opossum is interesting. The story is a little better, when they're setting up that Manny may be the very last mammut. I can't wait until there's a movie where the boy character says, "you're snotty and high maintenance, I'd rather stay single!" :) Anyway, it's a cute movie, degraded by the rude humor, but not ruined by it in my opinion.

There is also the constant theme of the girl (Queen Latifa's character) who takes pleasure in making the boy (Manny) bend over backwards to win her affection. My 11 year old felt sorry for the squirrel at times, working so hard and never getting that darn acorn. We all laughed out loud at times, especially during the sequences with the squirrel and the acorn - those are really funny. Our 7 year old was worried at times about the menacing dinosaurs and the beloved characters being in peril. Without the tasteless humor, I would give the movie 4 stars for entertainment value. If possible, I would give this movie 2.5 stars. I wish CSM would add a symbol for rudeness. I really wanted to like this movie, and I did enjoy some of it - there are lovable characters and creative cute parts, but I found the rude dialogue distracting and distasteful. Our family watched it, including our 7 and almost 11 year olds. We rented this movie, and I confess that I didn't see the first part.
